August 2004

August 19th, 2004 - Been a while since I updated my journal and quite a bit has changed.  First off my liver enzymes did come back down to the normal range and remained there for 8 weeks BUT I went on an additional medication (non- MS related) that also has liver involvement.  After the first 4 weeks of being on both Rebif and this other medication, my liver enzymes were beginning to creep back up out of the normal range.  We decided to stop the Rebif injections for the remainder of the time that I take the other medication (3-5 months total).  It's been nice to have a med break!  Haven't seen my belly  / thighs looks normal in quite some time!

At the same time, I made the decision to find a new neurologist.  There were some issues with Dr. availability / reachabiity and personality differences that lead me to "shop around" for a new neurologist.  At the first consult, we set up an appointment to have an MRI done since it had been almost 1.5 years since my last one.  We also discussed switching DM medication as I have a clear history of liver  intolerance / sensitivity with Rebif and the worst case scenario would be more than we both feel comfortable risking at this point.  We decided to switch to Copaxone as it has no liver involvement.

I have to say I'm not keen at all on taking daily injections.  I'm still such a wimp that I haven't actually been able to manually inject - just used the autoinjector.  It was rather nice to have non-shot nights 4 out of 7 days.  However, I won't miss the flu like symptoms I routinely experienced after the Rebif injections.

Currently  I'm still in the processing and registration stage with Copaxone and I may hold off on adding another medication (Copaxone)  to my routine until I get my next blood results back or until I finish the second medication.

The MRI showed a mild load of lesions.  Very comparable to the MRI taken in spring 2003.  Overall good news :)

No new symptoms - just the usual fatigue that I've experienced since my last exacerbation.
