February 2006 MS Journal |

February 2006 February 2, 2006 - Once again, it seems that the treatment can add more insult than the original problem. Yesterday was a tough day for me. Mostly from the after-effects of the steroids. I was extremely fatigued, was hard to concentrate, my upper back and neck were sore from water-gain, my lower back spasmed when I would first lie down - basically I felt full of water weight and miserable from steroids. When I feel this bad it's hard to know if it was even worth taking the steroids in the first place. My vote right this second is no, but I'm sure once I start dumping the extra fluids and start feeling more normal (and less like the stay-puff marshmallow man) I may reevaluate. I'm not sure the replacement neurologist was incorrect in his initial assessment as to whether I needed to be put on steroids this bout. I wasn't being objective about whether I needed the steroids (no surprise there). I took his opinion personally as though he was saying my MS wasn't bad enough or didn't matter. And then I went out and got a second opinion. Actually I ending up finding a doctor who gave me what I wanted despite the fact that it may not have been what I needed. I guess I just wanted somebody to take my MS progress more seriously. Looking at it from this point of view, I think I could've done without the steroids. I still think my newest neurologist is a better fit personality wise with me, but I will definitely have to think twice (three times even) about taking steroids for an "annoyance" relapse again. February 13, 2005 - I've been off Pepto Bismol for the "angry stomach" for 4 days now! Yeah! Still have 5# weight gain to get rid of - I attribute that to inactivity and eating more (and eating the wrong things) as it's been long enough that the water gain is gone. My leg is 90% back to normal - tiny little patches are numb - plus when I get out of a too warm/hot shower the numbness returns lightly in that leg but fades as I cool down. Fatigue is getting much more manageable and "normal" for me. Back to my routine schedule :) |
