June 2006

June 14th, 2006 - Today was Avonex shot #6 and the third one I've given to myself!

Since I had such a lousy night's sleep the first time (when I took the shot before bed), I've been taking the Avonex injection earlier in the day.  The second and third shots my husband was able to give them to me.  The rest I've had to give to myself in order to have them done earlier in the day.

To get myself more used to giving the injections myself, I had been starting to do my Copaxone injections by hand (at least the ones on the thighs and belly).  I'm still not to the point of being a "jabber"  - sticking the needle in with a quick jab.  I'm a slow and easy injector which works fine for me (scaredy cat that I am still!).

I take my Tylenol 2 hours prior to my Avonex injection and ice the area for 2 minutes before injecting.  The first time I did an IM injection myself I think it took me about 20 minutes to "talk" myself into it.  I got so far as to put the needle to the skin but chickened out.  When I noticed that I had already entered the skin the first attempt and hadn't felt it, I tried again and was able to give the shot successfully.

The flu-like symptoms have gotten better  - slowly.  I haven't had the intense chills, fever and pain I did with the first injection.  Just a mild malaise and stiff muscles the day of  and very mild flu-like symptoms the day after.

In another month and 1/2 I go in to get my liver enzymes checked.  Hopefully my liver is tolerating this level of Interferon Beta!
