May 2006

May 12, 2006 - I had my first injection of Avonex last night.  My husband gave it to me in the muscle of my right arm.  I'm not quite ready to inject myself.  I've *just* begun trying to self-inject my Copaxone subcutaneously and have only done it 5 or 6 times.  Not quite up to the challenge of an intramuscular shot yet.

The shot itself went fine.  I prepped by being well-hydrated, took ibuprofen 1.5 hours prior and iced the injection site before and after.  Things went well until 2 am when I awoke with the worst flu-like symptoms I've ever had.  My muscles and joints were sore and achy - I felt like I needed to curl into a ball to keep warm, but then the pain would be too great and I'd start shivering and have to stretch back out again. I'd be ok for a few seconds and it'd would start all over again.  I'm not sure I've been this miserable even with the flu.  I definitely had a fever and chills.  I was also a bit nauseous and didn't think taking an anti-inflammatory drug on a queasy stomach would be the best timing.

After about 2 hours the symptoms began to subside enough that I could fall back asleep.  Woke up in the morning stiff and achy but not nearly as bad as during the early morning hours.  Took my temperature and confirmed that at that time I did have a low grade fever.

*blech*  Really no fun at all.  Hopefully this will get better as time goes on.  I'll also try taking acetaminophen prior to the injection next time.

Good thing this is only once a week....
